Limitations enhance not limit

"The absence of limitations is the enemy of art." Orson Wells

Any artist can tell you limitations enhance their art and stretches their creativity. Whether it is the limitation inherit in their chosen medium or thrust on them by a client limitations are often where voice is found.

I think of a book I just read. The main character was an artist that had lost her vision and will to paint for a variety of reasons. She was given the opportunity by an old client to do a series of painting which she reluctantly took. The client had one limitation - she could paint what she saw, she had to paint what she felt. A tall order but one that freed her from her self imposed confinement.

I was recently asked by my brother to come up with some color schemes for an app he is designing. I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed - the possibilities were endless. A few days later he sent me an email outlining what he needed. A Triad color scheme. That limitation allowed me to focus and soon I had 16 color schemes for him and truly didn't want to stop.

As in art so in life. Limitations in life - whether they be rules or laws or commandments - are ultimately freeing when followed.

Being Visionary

Jonathan Swift stated "Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others."

We call those who stand at the precipice of their chosen fields and guide the direction of the field visionaries. But is there something unique to their personality that allows them to see beyond what is right in front of them or can it be a cultivated trait - a learned mindset? Can anyone cultivate the art of seeing?

I think with practice - yes.

Cutting edge, forward thinking can be practiced. It's seeking out the connections and patterns that can be used to however unlikely in your field. I think of the new innovation of electrically conductive Lego blocks. Making the connection of Legos and electrical conduits seems far fetched until you connect your knowledge of electrical currents and Lego blocks and it becomes obvious. Then comes the hard work of making it happen! You can train your mind to seek out those random connections through practice. Practice connecting random objects around you and you will find it soon becomes a habit and you will see connections everywhere.

Visionaries are not born with 'the vision' they cultivate it over a lifetime of seeking it.

I dropped off the face of the earth!!

You may have noticed the posts came to a grinding halt a while back. Sorry about that. I have a day job as an interior designer, which I love. At the beginning of the year my bosses insisted I take my licensing exams, I've been putting it off for years and they were no longer going to let me! So I've been in deep study mode, not a fun place to be. But never fear the exams will be over mid-April and I'll get back to the regularly scheduled program!

Wishes come true, Not free

Dreams and wishes do come true, but they always carry a price, a sacrifice if you will. Whether it be time, energy, or money you always have to pay the price of making your dream a reality. A lot of dreams die because we aren't willing to put in the effort to make them happen. You can wish upon a star - but then you have to get to work!

What is the price you are willing to pay for your dreams?

Building your dream has to start now

The longer you wait - the harder it becomes to start! Cease the day and start building your dream!

Nothing can exist till you dream it first

I've heard it said that dreaming is only for kids. Obviously I disagree. Without dreams the Wright Brothers would never have flown, Thomas Edison would never have invented the light bulb, or any of his other inventions we take for granted today. Dreams are what progress is made of. So what progress will you dream up this year? Make it big or make it small, after all any progress is good progress.

A Dream is a Wish your heart makes

As the new year begins we have set our resolutions. For many years mine have been set by my head, the practical resolutions - loose weight, eat healthier, exercise more, get along further in my career - sound familiar? When setting goals for the next year I have often overlooked my dreams. Or chose not to focus on them out of fear, or quite frankly not knowing what my dreams are.

This year is different. Sure I want to eat healthier and exercise so I can loose weight but I want this year to focus on my dreams, what my heart wants. So what does my heart want, what are my dreams? That's the million dollar question.

I dream of motivating people to be their best self. That is my goal for this blog. No matter who you are or what your goals may be I want to share inspiration, quotes, and encouragement so that we can all grow together.

I dream of being a mom. Unfortunately, a man, a husband, has to come first. So this is not a goal for this year but I can practice on my nieces and nephews and maybe some primary kids. And I can work on my relationships with others, being more vulnerable- I hate not being in control!

I dream of travel- of seeing the world- or maybe the world outside my own back yard. Road trips are the order of the day this year! Quick weekend getaways - sometimes by car, sometimes by plane, maybe even sometimes by train. I want to see to world around me!

I dream of being an artist! I've let other things get in the way of this far too long. This year I need to paint more, make more, learn more.

I was about to say that's enough dreams for me... but you can never have too many dreams or too big of dreams so I'll continue dreaming up dreams.

What are your dreams? What are you doing this year to make your dreams come true?
